Traveling Wave Characteristics


1. Transverse Waves. Particles in the disturbed medium move perpendicular to the wave of motion.

2. Longitudinal Waves. particles in the disturbed medium vibrate parallel to the wave of motion.

4. Wave speed.

velocity = wavelength/period

remember: period = 1/frequency ... so velocity = (wavelength)(frequency)

Before our graphs represent vertical displacement vs time. (Crest to Crest = PERIOD)

Now we get graphs of vertical displacement vs horizontal displacement. (Crest to Crest = WAVELENGTH)

5. Wavefronts and Rays. Distance between subsequent wavefronts is the wavelength. Rays represent the direction the wavefronts travel. Rays are always drawn perpindicular to the wavefronts.
